Radiant Floor Heating

Radiant floor heating is the most comfortable form of heating System. Extra comfort comes with a bit of delicate installation and set-up work. Price-focused competition and very basic inspection guidelines by authorities, especially in the past, have led unscrupulous contractors in the new housing industry to cut corners, using cheap material and simplifying the installations. This causes the installations to be full of problems.

Examples of these include: using grey-plastic tubing for the in-floor or floor heating instead of the proper ones (Red coloured plastic which is the grey-plastic plus the red air barrier shield). Grey-plastic (polybutylene) is said to draw oxygen into the plastic tubing through microscopic holes in the plastic pipes. The oxygen ingress into the plastic pipes is called oxygen permeation process. Oxygen permeation process accelerates with increase in temperature of the water inside the pipes. when the water temperature inside the grey-plastic pipe is higher than about 90°F, which is lower than our body temperature of 100 F, Oxygen is drawn into Radiant floor Heating system through plastic tubing with no air barrier shield. Oxygen in water oxidizes the ferrous metal in the boiler and other components of the heating system. What makes the oxidation process out of control, is the lack of mechanisms, in flawed Radiant floor heating systems, to control the water temperature going into the floor, while ensuring the temperature of the water returning to the boiler is hot enough to prevent condensation. Condensation in the boiler heat exchanger damages the boiler and can be a safety hazard. The formation of rust in radiant floor heating systems causes poor heating, discomfort and frequent breakdowns. It is impractical to remove and replace plastic piping in the floor. However, troubling conditions can be remedied without digging through the floor. We can get rid of rust formation and frequent break down problems! We have retrofit methods for different situations and budgets. However, for people who do not feel like doing substantial retrofit work, we know ways to maintain the problematic radiant floor heating systems.
